Mimicking Technology

Carlo Fantin takes pleasure in the looks of surprise and disbelief on people's faces, when they find out that his intricate, delicate artwork is all hand cut, not laser-cut or computer generated in any way. The frequency of these reactions have led him to explore technology's role in the production of fine art. For his new series in Mimicking Technology, he's developed new techniques, using simple hand tools such as craft knives and rotary tools to create works that appear to be created using laser cutters and CNC mills. While exploring new techniques of craft, Fantin maintains his personal esthetic throughout this body of work, which he describes as reminiscent of Art Nouveau and inspired by Baroque style.
